Claude Desktop Stays Always on Top
Why It Happens on Windows, and How to Unstick It

Short answer: Claude Desktop sometimes keeps a Windows "always on top" flag on its main window. Other apps then take the focus but stay hidden behind Claude. It is a known bug, still open on 7 October 2026. To unstick it:

  1. Quit Claude completely and reopen it - clears it until the next time.
  2. Clear the flag with one PowerShell command - no restart, no admin rights.
  3. PowerToys: press Win+Ctrl+T twice on the Claude window.
  4. Put Claude on its own virtual desktop (Win+Ctrl+D) to work around it.

What it looks like

Why it happens

Windows lets a window carry an "always on top" flag. Claude's main window ends up with that flag set, and keeps it. People who traced it in Claude's own logs have found three ways in (#85891, #89467):

Nothing is saved in Claude's settings, which is why a full restart clears it - until one of these happens again. It has been reported since August 2026 and was still reproduced on Claude Desktop 2.16120 and 2.19675 in early October.

How to unstick it

1. Quit Claude completely, then reopen it

Closing the window with the X is not enough: Claude keeps running in the background. Right-click Claude's icon near the clock and choose Quit (or Exit), then check Task Manager: no claude.exe from WindowsApps should be left. Several people found a dozen of them still running after "closing" the app. Then open Claude again.

2. Clear the flag without restarting

Paste this into PowerShell. No administrator rights needed; it only touches Claude windows that actually carry the flag, and leaves your conversations alone:

Add-Type -Namespace Win -Name Z -MemberDefinition @'
[DllImport("user32.dll")] public static extern int GetWindowLong(IntPtr h, int i);
[DllImport("user32.dll")] public static extern bool SetWindowPos(IntPtr h, IntPtr after, int x, int y, int cx, int cy, uint flags);
'@
Get-Process claude -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Where-Object MainWindowHandle -ne 0 | ForEach-Object {
  $h = $_.MainWindowHandle
  $top = ([Win.Z]::GetWindowLong($h, -20) -band 0x8) -ne 0
  if ($top) { [void][Win.Z]::SetWindowPos($h, [IntPtr]-2, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0x13) }
  "{0}  was on top: {1}" -f $_.MainWindowTitle, $top
}

It prints each Claude window and whether it was stuck on top. True means it was, and is now back to normal. The flag can come back at the next update, so keep the command somewhere handy.

3. With PowerToys: Win+Ctrl+T, twice

If you use Microsoft PowerToys, click the Claude window and press Win+Ctrl+T twice. The first press pins it with PowerToys, the second unpins it - and that unpinning clears the stuck flag too. Same limit: it comes back at the next update.

4. Work around it: a virtual desktop for Claude

"Always on top" only applies on one virtual desktop. Press Win+Ctrl+D to create a new desktop, move Claude there (Win+Tab, then drag it), and switch between desktops with Win+Ctrl+Left / Right. Claude can no longer cover your other apps.

Avoid "Show this window on all desktops" for Claude (right-click its thumbnail in Win+Tab). One user found that this, too, left the window pinned on top.

The opposite problem: closed with the X, and it won't come back

Clicking the X does not quit Claude: it hides the window and keeps Claude running in the background, with its icon near the clock. The taskbar button disappears with the window, which makes it look gone.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Claude Desktop stay on top of other windows?

Its main window ends up with the Windows "always on top" flag set. Users who traced it found it most often after Claude silently updates and restarts behind a window that was itself always on top, and also after Cowork or computer use sessions. It is a known bug, not a setting.

How do I turn off always on top in Claude Desktop?

There is no setting for it. Quit Claude completely from its icon near the clock and reopen it, or clear the flag without restarting with a short PowerShell command that calls SetWindowPos with HWND_NOTOPMOST on Claude's windows. With PowerToys, pressing Win+Ctrl+T twice on the Claude window also clears it.

Why does it come back?

Nothing is saved in Claude's settings: the flag is set again by the next silent update, Cowork session or Office add-in focus. Each fix lasts until one of these happens again.

Is there a way to keep Claude from covering my other apps?

Yes: move Claude to its own virtual desktop with Win+Ctrl+D. Always on top only applies within one desktop, so your other apps stay usable on the first one.

I closed Claude with the X and can't get the window back. What do I do?

The X only hides Claude; it keeps running in the background. Open Claude again from the Start menu, or click its icon near the clock, and the window comes back. To really quit, right-click that icon and choose Quit.

Is "claude immer im Vordergrund" the same problem?

Yes. It is the German description of the same bug: the Claude Desktop window stays in the foreground on Windows. The fixes on this page apply as they are.

Running several Claude accounts?
